If you were in Athens High School in 1984, there’s a chance you’ll remember The Great Scavenger Hunt (or you might have even been one of the fifteen or so participants). I’ve changed the names of everyone involved (and made them all animals, too), but some of you will know who the characters are. I’m the dog driving my Dad’s car. (I was sixteen and had just gotten my driver’s license.)
The cartoon was drawn fifteen years after the event, so of course there will be inaccuracies. But besides a few liberties in story-telling, and a few lapses of memory, this is a true story. I wrote it in five parts, and I’ll post each of them in the next five posts. Enjoy!
Also: many of you have enjoyed one of my earlier posts of a letter written to me by Tove Jansson, and several of you have shared your gratitude and love of Tove Jansson’s books with me, and I am so grateful! I wrote letters to several of my favorite authors, but Tove is the only one to respond. If you’re interested, go to my post on October 19, 2011. You’ll find the letter there. (And thank you all for helping her letter find its way back to Finland!)
Peace.
