This is a sketch in ink and colored pencils I drew in 1993 for a book I self-published, Double Tall Latte, Please. The book is written with silly illustrations and Dr. Suess-style rhymes about where one might drink espresso: “Drink it in the morning rain, drink it in the carpool lane.”
I sent the book out to numerous publishers until I got a positive response. The catch was this: the publisher needed four extra pages due to the printing layout. I set to work on the four extra pages, but in that time, I went into the hospital for two weeks. When I returned home, I learned that the publishing editor had since vacated his position, and the new editor was no longer interested in my book!
That began my days as a self-publisher, partially due to the large amount of money required for publishing submissions (and rejection letters!), and also my impatience to be published. There is a surprise ending to this story. During the time I was hospitalized, the Seattle Weekly wrote a brief piece about my book, and by the time I returned from the hospital, numerous people had sent me checks in the mail requesting my book! Of course, I’ve kept the article!
And I STILL want a copy of Double Tall Latte, Please!!! I wanted one then and I want one now. 🙂 Maybe republish? Please?
I have a few left! I can one to you right after Thanksgiving — you may have to remind me your address (on fb message). Cover price is $3.95 and $2.00 postage. You should have it next week!
