This is from my 1993 book, Double Tall Latte, Please. This is the Puget Sound, the body of water separating Seattle from the Olympic peninsula, and which opens out to the Pacific Ocean further north. The Sound is alive with boat traffic, especially in the summer months. Besides the hourly ferries that carry tourists and commuters to Bremerton, Port Townsend, and the San Juan Islands, you’ll often see giant freight ships, canoes, kayaks, houseboats, sailboats, Orca whale tours, fishing boats, and yachts.
My book was written in Dr. Suess-style rhymes about where to drink espresso. The page before this scene shows a guy waiting for a train, and reads: “Drink it in the underground”, then: “Drink it on the Puget Sound”.
Here are a few sketches I found of my attampts at drawing boats and capturing the feeling of the Puget Sound:
Cooter's in that picture!
